Mechanism of action: Premarin for oral administration contains a mixture of conjugated estrogens obtained exclusively from natural sources, occurring as the sodium salts of water-soluble estrogen sulfates blended to represent the average composition of material derived from pregnant mares^ urine. It is a mixture of sodium estrone sulfate and sodium equilin sulfate.

It is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. Other uses include prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and replacement of estrogen in women with ovarian failure or other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body. Premarin is sometimes used as part of cancer treatment in women and men.

Dosage: 10mg 3 times daily for at least 3 months.

Precautions: You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using Premarin (conjugated estrogens) if you have: vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, certain cancers (such as breast cancer, cancer of the uterus/ovaries), blood clots, stroke, heart disease (such as heart attack), liver disease, kidney disease, family medical history (especially breast lumps, cancer, blood clots, angioedema), blood clotting disorders (such as protein C or protein S deficiency), high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels.

Interactions: drugs may interact with Premarin,
• a blood thinner such as warfarin
• a thyroid medication such as levothyroxine
• insulin or diabetes medicine taken by mouth;
• rifampin
• ketoconazole
• seizure medicines such as phenytoin , carbamazepine , felbamate , oxcarbazepine , or primidone .
• a barbiturate such as amobarbital , butabarbital , mephobarbital , secobarbital, or phenobarbital .

Storage: Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
